Property developers often highlight a property’s walking distance to a train station as a key selling point. As a result, homes located near MRT, LRT, or KTM stations are typically sold at a premium.
However, Malaysia remains a car-dependent country, with the majority of people still relying on private vehicles for their daily commute. Although the public transportation network has expanded significantly over the past decade, the government continues to encourage greater adoption through various initiatives and infrastructure investments.
So, how can we tell whether a particular station is actually well used?
Fortunately, we can check the ridership data published on the Public Transportation website.
Public Transportation
The website provides an overview of rail ridership across the Klang Valley.

It also breaks down monthly ridership by rail line. As of now, the LRT Kelana Jaya Line and MRT Kajang Line are the busiest, each recording around 6–7 million passenger trips per month.

Ridership by Individual Station
One of the most useful features is that you can also view the ridership of individual stations.

For example, Bangsar Station records approximately 180,000 passenger trips per month.
In comparison, 16 Sierra Station records only around 4,000 passenger trips per month.
Ridership at 16 Sierra may increase in the future as nearby developments, such as Covo, are completed. However, the current data suggests that rail usage around the station is still relatively low.

One thing to keep in mind is that the figures include passengers who interchange at a station. Therefore, ridership does not necessarily represent the number of nearby residents who begin or end their journeys there.
Nevertheless, the data provides a useful indication of how busy a station is and can serve as an additional reference when evaluating properties near public transportation.
I hope you find this useful during your property search!
